Groups in the Parish
Below is a list of some of the groups within the parish. If you wish to become involved with any of the groups please do not hesitate to get in touch,
Parish Finance Council
The Parish Finance Council is an advisory group (mandated by canon law) that assists the Parish Priest in developing an annual budget and in monitoring Parish income, expenditures, and financial procedures. The Parish Finance Council also assists the Parish Priest in presenting an annual financial report to the Parish.
The Parish Ladies Guild
The Parish Ladies Guild was formed in September 1993 from the previous Catholic Women’s League with the object of contributing tangible benefits to the Parish, to give support to the Parish Priest and the Parish Family by undertaking any necessary tasks in providing the “extra ordinary” things. We always provide a full and varied programme of events.
Everyone is welcome to join these events and Parish support is really necessary. Meetings are held once a month at 2:30pm in the Parish Centre, Llantwit Major.
New members are always welcome, as is any lady (or gentlemen) of the Parish, who would like to assist us with our events.
St Vincent de Paul Society
WHO CARES? – THE SVP CARES
The St.Vincent de Paul Society in our parish began in 1969 and has continued ever since, reaching out and caring for the elderly, sick, lonely and bereaved. We are a small group of five full time and one auxiliary member, meeting fortnightly after a Mass – The EUCHARIST – THE SOURCE OF OUR WORK. We come together to deepen our spiritual life, to encourage each other and to maintain our links with the wider SVP Society. We visit in a spirit of quiet humility, service and confidentiality. During the last twelve months our visits have totalled 69 to hospital, 106 to care homes and 218 to own home visits as well as 54 lifts to Mass, medical appointments and parish social events. To emphasise the universality of the Society and be a witness of Christian charity in action we also support a Twinned group in Kerala, India.
New members are very welcome. Please leave your name and contact details with our Parish Office.
“Lord, help me to make time today to serve you in those who are most in need of encouragement or assistance”.
The Association for the Propagation of the Faith
In this parish, we have the little red boxes in people’s homes.
The idea is to put a few coins aside after shopping; the boxes are collected three times a year! The funds collected in each diocese of England and Wales are sent directly to local bishops in the mission territories by the APF which is the official charity for the overseas mission of the church, and gives support in some of the busiest, poorest and most isolated places – in all 1,069 mission dioceses in the world.
Many thanks to everyone helping to make the scheme a success and if you would like to help, maybe by having a red box in your home, please contact Richard Browning.
The Liturgy Group
The Liturgy Group looks at how the parish uses Liturgy and plans for the Liturgical needs of the future. It covers quite a wide range of activities and keeps, if you like an overview with the Parish priest, of what is happening in the Parish. The activities cover Holy Mass, Welcomers, Altar Servers, Readers, Eucharistic Ministers and Music. Some of these activities simply have their own momentum and the people involved make it happen by arranging rotas. Many thanks to those involved.
Altar Servers
Training is given to girls and boys in year 5 and upwards for those who wish to serve at Mass.
Choir
The Choir sings at Sunday Vigil/morning Mass. Choir practice takes place on a Friday at 6:30pm in Our Lady & St. Illtyd. Contact Moira Robinson / Richard Browning
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
These assist with the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass and take communion to the sick. Contact Deirdre Barker / Judy Browning
Readers
Readers are trained to read at Mass and other liturgies.
Flower Arrangers
A LOVELY way to celebrate
A SPECIAL way to commemorate
A FITTING way to give thanks … for someone or something special, or just for life
A GREAT way to share … with others your pleasure in God’s glorious world.
Flowers at Church celebrate God’s goodness and gifts to us all; they are a fitting reminder of his glory and grace. Perhaps you would like to join the number of those who help? There are various ways in which you can do this:
- making a donation to the church with a request that it be put towards flowers
- join the flower rota for arranging flowers. If you enjoy flower arranging and could spare some time to do it a few times a year we would be very pleased to hear from you.
- sponsoring flowers in celebration or in memory of an event or anniversary. Particular dates may be available if you wish to provide flowers to commemorate an event or a loved one. Please ask the Parish Office in good time to book your hoped-for dates.
Cleaners
“Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
Colossians 3:17 says: And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Even in cleaning the church we bring God glory if we are doing it in his name. The purpose of the Cleaning Ministry is to keep our church well maintained so visitors have a welcoming atmosphere and a pleasant experience.
This important ministry, which is so easily taken for granted, is open to all and no special skills are required.
How can I get involved?
If you are interested in volunteering to help with the Cleaning Ministry please contact the Parish Office. Remember only a servant’s heart is required. Helping to keep our church clean is a great way to find yourself blessed while serving God’s people.
